Ethiopian Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed stated on Saturday that his country trusts the United Arab Emirates (UAE) in its ability to build consensus among parties and mobilize every nation and sector of society to provide realistic climate solutions during the upcoming COP28 conference.

In a tweet from his official Twitter account, Abiy Ahmed said, “Ethiopia is at the forefront of the climate crisis. Extreme weather and drought conditions result in food and water insecurity, directly threatening our citizens and national development.”

He added, “To address these challenges, we need to bridge the climate finance gap in the Global South and make tangible progress in the Loss and Damage Fund and financing arrangements based on COP27 outcomes.”

“We have full confidence in the UAE as the ideal organizer for the COP28 conference to build consensus among parties and mobilize every country, region, and segment of society to provide realistic climate solutions and meaningful outcomes,” he continued.

Abiy Ahmed further explained that Dr. Sultan Al Jaber’s expertise in climate diplomacy, government, and the business sector is crucial in reforming the international financial infrastructure and seizing the opportunity for sustainable low-carbon economic development that supports both people and the planet.

In conclusion, he expressed gratitude for Dr. Sultan Al Jaber’s work as the Chairman of Masdar, supporting the cause of renewable energy in Ethiopia to enhance our country’s capacity for clean energy.

Note: COP refers to the Conference of the Parties, an annual meeting under the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC).
