The United States Agency for International Development, USAID, confirmed on June 8th, 2023 the suspension of its food aid to Ethiopia.
A spokesperson explained that the agency had determined, in coordination with the Ethiopian government, that a “widespread and coordinated campaign” would “hijack” it.
On the other hand, the spokesperson did not specify who was behind these diversions or to whom the aid was diverted.
According to an internal document prepared for foreign donors and cited by Reuters, USAID believes that these diversions “appear to be orchestrated by federal and regional government entities, with military units across the country”.
