Several countries have announced the evacuation of their nationals from Sudan, amid the armed conflict between the Sudanese army that started more than a week ago.

The South African government joined these countries in announcing on Monday the evacuation of their nationals and diplomatic personnel from Sudan.

The press was informed by Department of Foreign Affairs spokesperson Clayson Monyela that the evacuation of South Africans is underway and authorities are taking them to a neighboring country for safety.

The spokesperson did not give further details on the number of evacuees or when they would arrive in South Africa.

According to an earlier statement by Cyril Ramaphosa, 77 South Africans are stranded in Sudan.
