The Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) remains embroiled in violence in the North Kivu region. Following a series of bombings targeting displaced persons in Goma, clashes have persisted between the Congolese government forces and the M23 militia, allegedly supported by Rwanda. Incidents of conflict were reported over the weekend in the Masisi territory, once again triggering population displacement.

Violent confrontations were reported over the weekend in the southern part of the Masisi territory, near the town of Bitonga. The situation in eastern DRC has drawn condemnation from the Southern African Development Community (SADC), whose forces are currently being deployed in North Kivu.

In a statement released on Sunday, May 5th, the regional organization not only denounced the bombings on displaced camps but also announced plans to collaborate with the Congolese army to “neutralize M23 rebels, maintain peace by creating a secure environment, and open supply routes.”

Reinforced Troops

This announcement comes amid reports from the Congolese Minister of Defense indicating that the M23 and Rwandan troops are bolstering their forces. During last Friday’s Cabinet meeting, Jean-Pierre Bemba informed the government that new personnel and weaponry from Rwanda were reportedly being transported, notably through the Virunga National Park.

As a result of these clashes, populations in affected areas continue to flee, seeking refuge in displaced persons camps in Goma, where nearly a million people are already crowded.
