Cyclone Freddy: Malawi President Urges International Support

Malawi’s President Lazarus Chakwera on Wednesday called on the international community for support and expressed the country’s need for assistance in dealing with the aftermath of Cyclone Freddy which has left hundreds of people dead in the southern part of the country including Blantyre.

The president made the statement from the city of Blantyre where he was attending the funerals of some of the victims of the natural disaster.

Apart from the dead, 88 people were displaced.
Cyclone Freddy also hit Malawi’s neighbor Mozambique, killing at least 20 people, according to authorities.

According to the European Union’s Copernicus satellite system, more than 45,000 people are still in shelters.
