The Italian foreign minister announced the government’s commitment on Tuesday, to organizing a dedicated repatriation flight for Italian nationals in Niamey, the capital of Niger. This decisive action comes in response to the recent military takeover that has unfolded in the African nation.

Foreign Minister Antonio Tajani, using the messaging platform X (formerly known as Twitter), conveyed the Italian government’s decision to extend an opportunity for fellow citizens residing in Niamey to depart the city through a specially arranged flight to Italy. This proactive measure aims to assist Italian nationals in response to the unfolding situation in the capital of Niger.

Tajani reassured that the Italian embassy in Niger continues to operate without interruption, providing crucial consular support. Additionally, the ambassador, who had briefly traveled to Rome to participate in the U.N. Food Systems summit, is now returning to Niger to actively oversee diplomatic efforts during this critical time.

According to Tajani, Italy is firmly committed to pursuing political and diplomatic mediation efforts as part of its approach to addressing the situation. The country aims to play an active role in seeking peaceful solutions and fostering dialogue to contribute positively to the ongoing developments in the region.

Italy clarified that its provision of a flight for its citizens in Niger does not constitute a formal evacuation operation. Instead, it reflects the government’s commitment to assisting its nationals during this period of uncertainty.
