In Senegal, the conclusions of the national dialogue will be presented to President Macky Sall during a ceremony scheduled for 4 p.m. UT this Saturday.

On May 30th, President Macky Sall of Senegal launched national dialogue discussions in a very tense political context, on the eve of the conviction of Ousmane Sonko. The dialogue lasted two weeks, but part of the opposition boycotted the consultations.

The committee has pointed to 12 points of agreement, 4 points of disagreement, and 2 points in suspense concerning the political questions. The main consensus includes the principle of a review of the trial of Karim Wade and a modification of the electoral code that would allow candidates pardoned by the Head of State, such as Khalifa Sall, to participate in the presidential election in February. Karim Wade of the Senegalese Democratic Party (PDS) was convicted in 2015 for illicit enrichment, and Khalifa Sall, former mayor of Dakar, in 2018 for “fraud on public funds”.

The political commission has designated Idrissa Seck, who recently left the presidential movement, as the leader of the opposition, since he came second in the presidential election. Meanwhile, Ousmane Sonko has been sentenced to two years in prison but has not been arrested to date.

As for the question of a possible 3rd candidacy of President Macky Sall for 2024, each camp has remained in its position. Finally, the delegates simply call for “respect for the Constitution, laws and regulations”.
