The executive secretary of the Southern African Development Community (SADC), Elias Magosi, said on Wednesday that SADC will take the necessary measures and work with member states to address disasters.

To this end, the official said SADC will improve early warning systems and develop annual contingency plans to ensure that member states are resilient to disasters.

The statement comes after 400 villagers were killed in floods in the eastern Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) earlier this month.

Thus, Elias Magosi took the opportunity to express his condolences to the people of the DRC after the death of more than 400 people, adding that the organization is aware that many people are missing and the damage caused by these disasters to infrastructure.

The official added that SADC is coordinating with the DRC’s Civil Protection Unit to assess the impact of natural disasters and provide assistance to those affected.
