Africa had the highest compliance rate with the Paris Climate Change Agreement, according to the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP).

The announcement was made by UNEP Deputy Executive Director Elizabeth Mrema at the third regional symposium on environmental awareness of the judiciary in Africa held in Nairobi.

In this regard, Ms. Mrema explained that African countries have shown leadership, as 98% of them have submitted their nationally determined contributions to reduce greenhouse gas emissions. Eighty percent have submitted updates of their contributions.

In addition, African countries had a set of laws and policies on the environment and climate change, Ms. Mrema revealed.

The UNEP official noted that at the regional level, the African Union has a climate strategy dedicated to strengthening regional policies and that at the sub-regional level, the regional economic commissions also have policy frameworks related to climate change.
