Brazilian President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva stated on Tuesday that the BRICS consortium of emerging nations is not intended to pose a challenge to other global coalitions like the G7 or the United States. Rather, its purpose lies in the organization and coordination of the “Global South,” seeking to enhance cooperation among nations in this region.

“We aim not to serve as a contrasting entity to the G7, G20, or the United States,” Lula expressed during a live broadcast on social media while participating in the BRICS summit in South Africa. “Our intention is solely to facilitate the coordination and organization of our collective efforts.”

Once more, the progressive leader advocated for the establishment of a shared trading currency among BRICS nations, clarifying that this initiative is not designed to “reject” the U.S. dollar. Rather, its purpose is to streamline trade transactions among these emerging countries by employing their respective currencies.

He voiced his support for the inclusion of additional countries into BRICS, which currently consists of Brazil, Russia, India, China, and South Africa. However, he emphasized the importance of establishing certain conditions to prevent it from turning into a situation resembling the “Tower of Babel.”

“We aspire to shape BRICS into a multilateral institution rather than an exclusive enclave”, Lula affirmed, highlighting his particular inclination towards Argentina’s inclusion in the group.
