In the early hours of Sunday morning, Gauteng residents were abruptly awakened by a powerful tremor, leaving them startled and shaken.

According to automated data collected by the Council of Geoscience, the earthquake was recorded as a 4.7 magnitude event, with its epicenter located in Alberton.

The seismic activity occurred precisely at 02:38 am, disrupting the tranquility of the region.

The cause of the tremor remains uncertain, as it is yet to be determined whether it resulted from natural seismic activity or was triggered by mining operations.

Residents took to social media platforms to share their firsthand experiences of the earthquake. One individual vividly described the sensation as akin to being inside a “moving train,” while others reported their walls trembling and the disconcerting sight of dust filling their rooms upon waking up.

Videos capturing the tremor’s impact, particularly in areas like Boksburg, have been circulating on Twitter, further illustrating the intensity of the event.
