The United Nations Civil Society Conference commenced in Nairobi on Thursday, bringing together representatives from civil society, governments, senior United Nations officials, youth changemakers, and academia.

The conference, boasting over 3000 attendees, has garnered significant interest against the backdrop of escalating attacks and restrictions on civil society actors in numerous countries.

Zainabu Bangura, Head of the UN office in Nairobi, emphasized the critical role of civil society in addressing global governance issues. “Civil society plays a fundamental role in shaping a future that, now more than ever, requires multilateral approaches to ensure an inclusive, sustainable, and safe society for all,” stated Bangura.

Under the theme “Shaping a Future of Global and Sustainable Progress,” the Nairobi conference aims not only to galvanize momentum but also to influence discussions on the Pact for the Future.

Civil society actors are advocating for a greater voice on critical issues such as climate change and pandemic control. “As civil society leaders, we have a unique responsibility to lead the way in shaping this future of global and sustainable progress,” remarked Karimot Odebode, SDG Young Leader and founder of the Black Dream Initiative.

Marking a significant milestone, this conference is the first to be held in the Global South and will serve as a precursor to the Summit of the Future scheduled to take place in New York in September.
