South African local authorities announced on Monday that eleven people were killed and dozens injured in a road accident on Sunday in the Eastern Cape province, in the southeast of South Africa.

Unathi Binqose, the spokesman for the provincial Department of Transport, said that a minibus crashed into a bus between the towns of Flagstaff and Lusikisiki, causing the accident.

Accordingly, Unathi Binqose added that the emergency services had been dispatched to the scene to assist the injured and that an investigation had been launched to determine the causes of this fatal accident.

The South African government recently expressed concern about the increase in fatal road accidents. According to official figures, more than 14,000 people are killed on the country’s roads every year.

The latest tragedy occurred in March this year when sixteen people were killed in a road accident in Limpopo province, in the northeast of the country.
