The Transitional Legislative Assembly (TLA) has approved the convening of a national conference to decide the course of the transition, set to end on July 1st.

This legislation proposal, endorsed unanimously by all 71 members of the Transitional Legislative Assembly (TLA), stems from the initiative of deputies appointed by the head of state, Captain Ibrahim TraorĂ©. Ousmane Bougouma, the president of the TLA, emphasized that the proposal was submitted, discussed, and adopted with “the agreement of the head of state, Captain Ibrahim TraorĂ©.”

With this adoption, parliamentarians give their consent for the convening of the national conference to determine the trajectory of the transition in Burkina Faso.

Edouard Sawadogo, the leader of the group of deputies appointed by Captain Ibrahim TraorĂ©, deems it “prudent” to engage with the populace so they can express their views on the fate of the transition. “It is the grassroots forces that will decide whether the transition is extended or not,” he asserts.

This law does not alter the October 2022 charter and does not dictate the content of the forthcoming conference.

According to the TLA president, this adoption prevents the country from falling into a “legal vacuum” that could pose challenges.

Parliamentarians aim for the conference to be held one month before the current transition’s end, scheduled for July 1st.
