Following the release of a video last month confirming his kidnapping by the Al-Qaeda splinter group, talks to secure the release of Gerco van Deventer from Mali are progressing well, according to the humanitarian aid organization, Gift of the Givers.

The hostage negotiator returned from Mali and will meet soon, according to Imtiaz Sooliman, Gift of the Givers founder. Van Deventer, a paramedic from Swellendam, confirmed that he was shot in his left arm while working in Libya in 2017 after he was abducted.

While it is difficult to determine the likelihood of success at this stage, Sooliman expressed his commitment to continuing all efforts to secure Van Deventer’s release without harm, conditions, or ransom payments.

The situation of a kidnapped individual is a complex one that requires careful negotiations, and Gift of the Givers’ progress is encouraging. The safety and well-being of Van Deventer and all individuals in similar situations should remain the top priority in any such efforts. We can only hope that these talks will lead to a peaceful resolution and a safe return home for Van Deventer.
