Kenya has announced the postponement of the reopening of schools for the second term session by one week in response to the widespread flooding that has claimed the lives of over 70 people.

Initially scheduled to commence on Monday, the resumption of classes has been rescheduled to May 6th, as disclosed in a statement by Dr. Ezekiel Machogu, the Cabinet Secretary for Education, Gender, and Health.

The decision to delay the reopening comes after an assessment conducted by the Ministry of Education, in collaboration with other relevant government agencies, revealed significant damage to numerous schools across the country due to heavy rains.

Dr. Machogu emphasized the severity of the situation, stating that risking the lives of learners and staff without adequate safety measures in place would be imprudent. Consequently, the ministry has opted to postpone the reopening to ensure the safety of all affected school communities.

While acknowledging the adverse effects of the rains, Dr. Machogu assured the public that measures to mitigate these effects would be implemented. The ministry will collaborate with relevant agencies and stakeholders to address the challenges posed by the flooding and provide regular updates on developments in the education sector.

The heavy rainy season, which began in March, has been exacerbated by the El NiƱo weather pattern, resulting in flash floods that have submerged roads and neighborhoods. Over 130,000 people from 24,000 households have been displaced as a result of the flooding, with many seeking refuge in temporary shelters.

In Nairobi, the capital city, nearly one-third of all public schools have been significantly impacted by the floods, according to Belio Kipsang, the principal secretary for education. The extensive damage to educational facilities has necessitated the postponement of the school reopening originally scheduled for Monday after the mid-term holidays.

The government’s decision underscores its commitment to prioritizing the safety and well-being of students and staff amid the ongoing challenges posed by the heavy monsoon rains.
