Calm has returned to the Amhara region after a week marked by deadly violence against the reform of regional forces announced by the federal government. The Ethiopian Human Rights Commission has confirmed that civilians were killed during the clashes.

Life has resumed in Bahir Dar, Debre Birhan, and in all the towns of Amhara where tension was high at the start of the week. Residents confirmed to the Addis Standard news site that businesses had reopened and people were going about their business peacefully again.

A regional public media outlet, the Amhara Media Corporation, reported that in “Bahir Dar and northern Wollo”, the Fanos militiamen had accepted the call for calm “from the regional authorities and the federal army command”.

No special assessment is yet known after the heavy fighting that took place in the region. In a statement, the Ethiopian Human Rights Commission only confirmed that “clashes in some areas have resulted in the death and injury of civilians, including aid workers, as a result of actions carried out by the forces security and attacks from unidentified individuals. »
