The European Union’s High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy, Josep Borrell, said on Tuesday that the European Union and the United States will “gradually” restore relations with Addis Ababa while addressing both the Ethiopian government and the Tigrayans.

He added that the EU and the US are monitoring the implementation of the peace agreement that ended the civil war in Ethiopia.

Borrel’s statement came after a meeting with US Secretary of State Antony Blinken.

Mr. Borrel also acknowledged that the peace process in Ethiopia is “one of the few positive pieces of news we have in the world” while reiterating the support of the EU and the US for the agreement.

The peace agreement was signed on 2 November 2022 in Pretoria, ending a two-year conflict in Tigray, which is located in northern Ethiopia.

The conflict between federal government forces and rebels of the Tigray People’s Liberation Front (TPLF) has left some 600,000 dead, according to the African Union.
