The lives of millions of people in parts of Ethiopia, Kenya, Somalia, and South Sudan are at risk because of the drought that is severely impacting the countries of the Horn of Africa, which is considered the worst drought in its history.

In a context of inflation and insecurity that weighs heavily on these countries, the situation is even worse.

Forecasts of a “sixth season of poor rains between March and May 2023” are worrying these countries in the Horn of Africa.

According to several observers, the long drought in the Horn of Africa has become the worst disaster of its kind in the eastern part of the continent.

People in the Horn of Africa are suffering the consequences of drought, compounded by malnutrition, water shortages, and pandemics.

In light of this situation, the international community and humanitarian organizations are called upon to act to alleviate the suffering of the hard-hit population in this part of Africa.

The UN High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) has pointed out that the combination of climate change and conflict in the region is aggravating an already dire humanitarian situation.

For its part, the World Food Programme (WFP) said in its latest report on the situation and response to the drought in the Horn of Africa that countries in the region have been facing severe drought for the past two and a half years, after five “unsuccessful rainy seasons”. This severe drought is causing unprecedented levels of food insecurity in Ethiopia, Kenya, and Somalia.
