Residents claim that the Tunisian government has begun turning off drinking water at night in some parts of the capital and other cities in an apparent effort to cut down on consumption during a severe drought.

Unannounced water cuts in the capital city of Tunis, Hammamet, Sousse, Monastir, and Sfax pose a risk of escalating civil unrest in a nation where the populace is plagued by subpar public services, rising inflation, and a fragile economy.

Contacted water distribution business representatives opted not to comment.

Due to the severe drought, the country is experiencing, officials have warned that the ministry may start cutting off water delivery at night throughout the summer to cut down on use.

However, it appears that the persistent lack of rain has prompted some authorities to begin doing so earlier than usual.

A member of the new parliament named Yassin Mami claimed that officials from the national water company told him that the country was in danger of running out of water as a result of the regular interruptions to the water supply in Hammamet city.
