Renowned Nigerian actor Zulu Adigwe, a distinguished graduate in Theatre Arts from the University of Ibadan, has passed away. Adigwe gained nationwide acclaim in 1987 for his iconic portrayal of Mr B in the long-running sitcom Basi and Company, a role he portrayed for seven years.

The news of his demise was confirmed by Abubakar Yakubu, the National Secretary of the Actors Guild of Nigeria (AGN), during a telephone interview with Weafrica24 on Wednesday.

While mourning Adigwe’s passing, Yakubu stated that the AGN is awaiting further details regarding the circumstances of his death and plans for his burial.

Throughout his illustrious career, Adigwe showcased his exceptional talent in various blockbuster films, including the critically acclaimed Living in Bondage: Breaking Free (2019). His versatility as an actor was evident in his roles in movies such as Isakaba, Unforgettable, Blood Diamond, The Powerful Baby, The Grandmaster, My Promise, City of Kings, and Divided Heart, among others. Adigwe was predominantly recognized for his portrayal of chiefs, traditional rulers, fathers, and elders on screen.

The Nigerian film industry, commonly known as Nollywood, has been deeply saddened by the loss of several talented actors since the beginning of the year. Adigwe’s passing adds to the list of notable figures, including Junior Pope, who tragically lost his life in a boat accident while en route to a movie set.

Among the other actors mourned by the industry are Adejumoke Aderounmu, Mr. Ibu, Sisi Quadri, Olofa Ina, Amaechi Muonagor, Saratu Gidado, and Ethel Ekpe. In response to the recent spate of deaths, Emeka Rollas, the president of the AGN, announced that the renowned Nigerian televangelist Jerry Eze will lead a four-day fasting and prayer session to seek divine intervention against further losses in Nollywood. Rollas emphasized the urgency of spiritual intervention in light of recent tragedies, including the boat mishap that claimed the lives of Jnr Pope and five crew members in Asaba.

The AGN’s decision to embark on fasting and prayer reflects the industry’s collective resolve to mitigate future tragedies and uphold the well-being of its members.
