South Africa is preparing for a day of the general strike and demonstrations on Monday, with the far-left party calling for a day of protests.

Concerns are mounting among the authorities about a repeat of the deadly riots of 2021 when at least 350 people were killed in protests sparked by the jailing of former president Jacob Zuma.

In anticipation of the day’s events, the authorities have announced an increased police presence to prevent violence.

For his part, the spokesman for President Cyril Ramaphosa, Vincent Magwenya said in a press conference that the president has ordered the police to do what is necessary to avoid a repeat of the scenes of 2021.

The Economic Freedom Fighters party on Saturday called on citizens to demonstrate on Monday to demand the resignation of President Ramaphosa over his mismanagement of the flagging economy, stratospheric unemployment, and constant power cuts.
