Participants in the Standing Committee session of the sixth Pan-African Parliament (PAP) called on Thursday in Johannesburg, African countries to find innovative ways to self-finance the fight against climate change.

The chairman of the Committee on Rural Economy, Agriculture, Natural Resources and Environment, Didier Molisho Sadi recommended increasing national budgets in this regard, in the current context marked by the challenges related to climate change.

Joining the same idea, the MEP, Mr Pierre Larraouturou, stressed the urgency for African Union member countries to dedicate national funding to combat climate change, including mitigation measures.

He noted that the fundamental question is how to find these sources of funding without resorting to additional loans.

In this sense, he called for synergies to pressure banks and donors to finance climate change programmes.

Other speakers warned that if this problem is not curbed, agricultural production in Africa will fall by another 50 percent.

The Pan-African Parliament’s standing committees began their meetings last Monday at the institution’s headquarters in Midrand, in the presence of a Moroccan parliamentary delegation.
