Young men dressed in yellow waistcoats are volunteering to direct traffic in Johannesburg, South Africa, where traffic lights are suddenly going out due to the country’s power cuts.

It is a scene that is repeated time and time again in this city hit by record load shedding, which lasts up to 12 hours a day.

This extinguishing of traffic lights sometimes causes fights and insults between motorists, which creates a kind of total chaos.

What is weird is the absence of the police in these road junctions, while the homeless or beggars take over.

Some of these yellow waistcoats, who are doing the work of the police, have said that some drivers help them with change for the work they do and some yell at them because they don’t want to wait.

The police in Johannesburg admit that they are completely understaffed when it comes to managing traffic when the lights go out every two hours, several times a day.

City Police (JMPD) spokesperson, acknowledges the commendable work that the homeless do but warns of the injuries that can occur when they operate.
