According to data recently released by the Spanish Electricity Network “Red Eléctrica de España”, the quantity of Spanish electricity (net) that Morocco imported via undersea interconnection cables witnessed a tangible development over the past months of the year 2022 until the end of January of this year. Red Eléctrica de España is the operator of the high-voltage electricity transmission network in Spain.

Morocco imported a total of 1,430 gigawatt-hours from its northern neighbor, the Iberian Kingdom, throughout 2022, compared to 179 gigawatt-hours exported from Morocco to Spain in 2021, according to the numbered data.

The same data showed that it is evident that the volume of electric energy exchanges, via undersea link cables between the two countries, has increased at an accelerated rate since the visit of the Spanish Prime Minister to Morocco in April 2022, which culminated in Madrid and Rabat declaration of “their intention to open a new phase of the partnership.”

The transmission lines submerged undersea water between Morocco and Spain, transferred 205 gigawatt-hours of electricity, produced in Spain in the direction of Morocco in June 2022, after it was in May of the same year not exceeding 38 gigawatt-hours and in April 23 gigawatt-hours.
