The South African Chamber of Commerce and Agriculture on Monday warned that the El Niño phenomenon poses a threat to South Africa’s food security.

A statement from the chamber noted that the drought caused by El Niño is likely to lead to food insecurity both in South Africa and in the region.

Environmentalists explained that the heavy rains experienced in the country were above normal La Niña levels, which will certainly impact South African agriculture.

According to data from the International Climate Research Institute, El Niño could be triggered by the end of the year, leading to a drought, which could intensify any problems.

El Niño is a phenomenon that appeared in 1997 and was characterized by an increase in temperature in the western Pacific and along the American coast.
