The African Development Bank (AfDB) has signed a joint partnership action plan with the Islamic Development Bank (IDB) for the development of the pharmaceutical industry sector in African member countries, a statement said.

The action plan was signed on Thursday at the IDB headquarters in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia by Abdu Mukhtar, Director of Industrial and Commercial Development at the African Development Bank, and Idrissa Dia, Director of the Economic and Social Infrastructure Department at the Islamic Development Bank.

The agreement was signed at the closing of two days of presentations on the institutions’ health strategies in Africa and the African Development Bank’s pharmaceutical action plan.

The statement said the plan promotes cooperation and focuses on strengthening Africa’s health systems.

During the deliberations, the two institutions discussed the possibilities of co-financing a set of joint pharmaceutical projects. For example, the two institutions intend to cooperate in the organisation of the Global Pharmaceutical Business Forum in May 2023.
