At least 12 people were killed last week in eastern South Africa due to floods that severely affected the region.

The situation has been described as catastrophic by NGOs. One of the worst affected areas in the country is the Mpumalanga province.

Due to the floods, some areas are inaccessible due to the collapse of some bridges washed away. Helicopters are needed to get to some of the inaccessible areas.

A representative of the Gift of the Givers told the media that an army helicopter was needed to distribute food to some of the villages that are now living on an island because of the floods.

Other people are living in schools and community halls as their homes have been flooded with water.
According to weather warnings, there may be more rain and so the country can expect the worst.
