The United Nations Special Rapporteur on violence against women, Reem AlSalem, revealed during her visit to Libya that the levels of violence against women and girls in Libya are high.

Alsalem stressed that the killing of girls and women for more than one reason is increasing, as well as acts of physical, economic, political and social violence in the private and public spheres.

AlSalem attributed the reason for the increase in violence to impunity for the crimes committed and the Proliferation of armed groups and weapons.

Moreover, Alsalem attributed the reasons for the increase in violence to political stalemate, lack of security and stability, challenges related to governance, rule of law, and legal frameworks that are not in line with the international obligations in the field of human rights.

The eight days visit made the UN Special Rapporteur stress the need to take urgent measures to end the ongoing cycle of violence against Libyan and non-Libyan women and girls.
