In an unprecedented toll, at least 49 people were killed on the coast of Tan-Tan, in southern Morocco, 200 km from the Canary Islands, according to the non-governmental organization Caminando Fronteras.

The same source revealed that the victims were on board a clandestine immigration boat that was heading to the Canary Islands, and It departed from the coast of Tan-Tan with 56 clandestine immigrants on board.

According to the NGO Caminando Fronteras, 11 bodies were found on the local beach, meanwhile, 56 people who were on another boat are still missing.

Many NGOs campaigning for migrants’ rights deplore the fact that search devices are not activated when an alert is sent, neither by the Moroccan government nor by the Spanish government.
