A multi-story building on Lagos Street in Garki, Abuja, crumbled to the ground, claiming the lives of two individuals and leaving numerous others trapped in the debris.

An individual at the scene recounted the heart-wrenching incident to an online source, The building comprised several apartments and shops on the ground floor, and it succumbed to the force of a torrential downpour that commenced around 11 p.m. on Wednesday.

The calamity spawned a scene of chaos and anguish as witnesses reported cries of desperation reverberating through the air. The building, fully occupied at the time, became a grim tableau of people grappling with the reality of a disaster unfolding before them amidst the relentless rain.

Confirmed reports from the Federal Emergency Management Authority (FEMA) indicate that 37 individuals have been successfully rescued, but the somber news also reveals that two lives have been tragically claimed. Dr. Abbass Idriss, the Director General of FEMA, swiftly addressed the situation in a Thursday morning statement detailing the ongoing rescue operations.

As the hours pass, the collaborative efforts of various emergency response agencies continue to evolve, exemplified by the involvement of the FCT Emergency Management Agency, Federal Road Safety Corps, FCT Police Command, and the Vehicle Inspection Office (VIO). The situation remains critical as rescue teams await the arrival of excavators to meticulously sift through the rubble, leaving no stone unturned in their mission to save lives
