A partnership agreement aimed at guaranteeing Kenya access to the European market and attracting investors was signed between the Kenyan government and the European Union on Monday in Nairobi.

The agreement was initialed by Kenyan Trade Minister Moses Koria and European Trade Commissioner Valdis Dombrovskis, in the presence of President William Ruto.

The EU will give Kenya immediate duty-free access and allow Nairobi to gradually open its market to European products, except a series of sensitive products, through this agreement.

This agreement was first negotiated in 2016 when the EU began talks with the five countries of the East African Community (EAC).

The EU is Kenya’s largest export market, accounting for 20% of the country’s total exports, made up mainly of agricultural products such as tea, coffee, and flowers.
