Following the military vote a week ago, the entire population of Mali is set to vote on Sunday 18th June for or against a new Constitution.

Supporters of the proposed fundamental law believe that it will strengthen the democratic nature of the Malian state, but critics believe that the proposed fundamental law would give too many powers to the Head of State.

Amadou Koïta, President of the Socialist Party Yelen Koura and a supporter of the new Constitution, believes that this change could speed up the end of the transition, and that some progress has been made, but that it is not enough.

According to Amadou Koïta, this is an extremely important stage in the lifting of sanctions and the return to constitutional order, starting with a referendum, followed by elections and the creation of the Senate, so that Mali can begin its return to the concert of nations and allow a certain traditional legitimacy to participate in the management of power.

The President of the Socialist Party, Yelen Koura, announced that the text also makes it possible to put an end to political transhumance, to create the conditions for elections to take place under appropriate conditions, in particular, to introduce either proportional representation or other voting methods.

According to Amadou Koïta, the new constitution also provides for the creation of a Court of Auditors, a standard in the sub-region that has been sought after for years, adding that Malians will also be able to appeal to the Constitutional Council.

But critics of the proposed fundamental law believe that it gives far too many powers to the Head of State. Among them is Djiguiba Keita, known as ” Ready for the Revolution ” (PPR), secretary general of the Parena party, who claims that this new text is not democratic, believing that ” this new constitution only adds to the President’s power, as was the case with the 1992 Constitution “.
