In a tragic event described as one of the deadliest railway accidents in India’s recent history, nearly 300 lives were lost and hundreds of individuals sustained injuries. President Cyril Ramaphosa expresses his heartfelt condolences to the grieving families affected by this unfortunate multiple train collision.

The incident occurred when a passenger train derailed and collided with another train. Shockingly, one of the trains also struck a stationary freight train in the Balasore district of Odisha state, located in the eastern part of the country.

With the death toll still feared to rise, at least 288 individuals have tragically lost their lives, leaving countless others injured and traumatized.

The Presidency asserts that the people of South Africa stand united in solidarity with those affected by this heart-wrenching tragedy. President Ramaphosa commends the dedicated efforts of the emergency rescue teams and medical professionals who have been tirelessly working to provide assistance and support.

The relationship between South Africa and India is characterized by a rich history and strong bonds encompassing politics, diplomacy, economics, and people-to-people connections. The Presidency underscores the enduring ties between the two nations, which officially established full diplomatic relations in 1993.

As rescue operations persist in India to cope with the aftermath of this calamity, the process of identifying the victims is also underway, aiming to bring closure and solace to the bereaved families.
