Two women have been arrested in Lagos by officers of the Rapid Intervention Brigade for attempting to sell a two-month-old baby, according to a statement published on the police force’s twitter page and signed by the Police Public Relations Officer, SP Benjamin Hundeyin.

According to the statement, the attempt to sell a baby was foiled by the Rapid Intervention Brigade on 26 May.

The suspect suspected of stealing the baby is called Oge Okolie. She is 25 years old and is the intermediary between the baby’s mother and the potential buyer.

The transaction was discovered in Oshodi when passengers on the public bus noticed the baby’s incessant crying and wondered why she couldn’t breastfeed him.

RHA officers quickly intervened when the suspect was on the verge of being lynched when she was discovered, to save her and the baby.

After the investigation was launched and conducted, the baby’s mother, Maria Ahmadu, aged 26, was arrested. She was then transferred with the other suspect and the baby to the command’s gender unit for further investigation and prosecution.
