In anticipation of cases of Cholera, the epidemic that is sweeping the southern African region, South Africa’s National Department of Health on Tuesday said it was on high alert to prevent imported cases of Cholera from crossing its borders.

Aneliswa Cele, an official in the health department, warned that there is a strong possibility that the importation of cases into South Africa will continue, taking into consideration the spread of the epidemic in southern Africa.

It should be recalled that the health situation in the country is worrying, due to the appearance of an outbreak of cholera in Hammanskraal north of Pretoria, causing 15 deaths. According to Ms. Cele, 90 people have sought medical help.

To avoid local transmission of the outbreak and the resulting deaths, Cele called for increased surveillance at the country’s frontiers.

It should be noted that the first cases of cholera in South Africa were detected in February. They were two sisters who were returning to Johannesburg after a trip to Malawi together.
