TotalEnergies, the French energy company (TTEF.PA), has announced its intention to resume the Mozambique LNG project, incorporating the recommendations outlined in a commissioned human rights report published on Tuesday. The company acknowledges the importance of adhering to ethical standards and is committed to addressing any concerns identified in the report before moving forward with the project.

According to a spokesperson from TotalEnergies, the project partners are currently unable to provide a specific timeline for the project’s restart. However, they acknowledge the report’s findings and emphasize the importance of the security enhancements implemented in the region. The company remains dedicated to ensuring the project’s resumption aligns with the recommendations outlined in the report.

Following the conclusions drawn from the report, an action plan has been formulated and subsequently approved for implementation. The company is committed to executing this plan, which incorporates the necessary measures to address the issues raised in the report effectively.

With a significant ownership share of 26.5%, TotalEnergies remains a key stakeholder in the development of the project. In 2021, the project was suspended due to unfortunate incidents involving attacks on civilians by insurgents affiliated with the Islamic State in Mozambique’s Cabo Delgado province, where the liquefied natural gas project is situated.

The remaining shareholders of the project include ENH (Mozambique’s state-owned company), Mitsui & Co. (a Japanese firm), PTTEP (a company from Thailand), as well as Indian companies ONGC Videsh, Bharat Petroleum, and Oil India Ltd.
