Clashes between the Sudanese army and the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces (RSF) continue for the 34th day in Khartoum, and heavy fighting has been reported in several other towns in the west of the country, at a time when talks in Saudi Arabia have not yet produced any concrete results.

Thus, the agreements in principle agreed last week in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia, have not been met.

On the morning of 19th May 2023, reports from Nyala, the capital of South Darfur, indicate that fighting resumed violently yesterday, with the army using artillery on their opponents’ positions.

This morning, a local journalist reported that the funerals of 18 civilians, including children, were able to take place before the noise of the guns resumed.

In Khartoum, where the RSF seems to control most of the city center and its strategic points, the army continues to step up its pressure, particularly on the bridges over the Nile in the north and the entrenched camps in the south.

In addition, the army chief, General al-Burhan, announced the dismissal of his number 2, the head of the RSF, General Hemedti, from the Sovereignty Council which still rules the country.

Hemedti is replaced by former rebel Malik Agar, leader of the Sudan People’s Liberation Movement-North, according to a council statement.
