Local sources in Ituri, in the northeastern part of the Democratic Republic of Congo, said that a new attack in this province attributed to the ADF rebels killed at least 6 civilians on Monday evening. Bloody attacks by various armed groups have caused hundreds of deaths in Ituri province.

In this regard, the president of the civil society of the Babila Babombi chiefdom, Gilbert Sivamwenda declared to the press that the ADF made an incursion on Monday in Makumo village.

Mr. Sivamwenda expressed disappointment at the “ineffectiveness of the Congolese and Ugandan military operations, FARDC and UPDF”, adding that the ADF is circulating freely in the province.

The two armies have conducted joint operations against Ituri and the neighboring province of North Kivu since the end of 2021 against the ADF.

A youth representative from Babila Babombi said the attackers killed villagers and looted property, while the army arrived late after the rebels had left.

Search teams are still searching for victims and have not yet been able to conduct searches outside the village due to insecurity.

The ADF is presented as the branch of the Islamic State group in Central Africa and is also accused of jihadist attacks on Ugandan soil.
