In May

In May, the Afro and African cultural scenes are bustling with activity, featuring a myriad of indoor and outdoor events in Saint-Louis, Lomé, Honfleur, Paris, London, Bordeaux, Angers, Khouribga, Yasmie Hammamet, Cannes, New York, Johannesburg, Bandjoun, Brussels, and more.

From May 2nd to May 6th, the Saint-Louis Documentary Film Festival is set to take place in Senegal. Dubbed as “a platform for discovering and sharing documentary works by African authors and filmmakers who have filmed in Africa,” Stlouis’Docs is organized by Suñuy Films (Senegal) and Krysalide Diffusion (France). The festival will showcase a diverse lineup of films, including Amchilini, choose me (Chad) by director Allamine Kader Kora Chad, Domy+Ailucha=Cenas Ket! (Mozambique, Portugal) by director Ico Costa, Yaram’U (Senegal), Massow Kâ ou Or de vie (Burkina Faso), and Boubacar Sangaré.

A total of 40 African countries submitted 886 films this year, and the organizers have made sure that all selected films will be available in multiple languages, including French, English, Spanish, Portuguese, and Arabic.

The National Assembly in Paris will bestow the medal on the director of Martinican origin, Euzhan Palcy, on May 3rd in order to celebrate the accomplishments of Afro-descendant filmmakers. Palcy, who rose to fame with her directorial debut of Rue Cases-Nègres in 1983, has inspired generations of French and American Afro-descendant filmmakers and actors with her staunch stance against racism. In recognition of her outstanding career, she received an honorary Oscar in 2022.
