Violence continues in the east of the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC). Clashes between community militias in the Irumu territory of Ituri province have left at least 30 people dead and more than 500 houses burnt.

The Ituri civil society coordinator, Dieudonné Lossa, said that the fighting was between militiamen from the Cooperative for the Development of Congo (CODECO) and the Patriotic and Integrationist Front of Congo (FPIC).

For his part, the spokesman for the Armed Forces of the DRC (FARDC) in Ituri, Jules Ngongo, stressed that new measures have been taken to constrain the two armed groups.

Ituri province is plagued by instability caused by local armed groups, causing a humanitarian crisis and the displacement of many people within the country.
