Twitter has made a major announcement that starting today, Friday, April 21, 2023, non-subscribers to the Twitter ‘blue tick’ will no longer be able to run advertisements on the platform. This move comes after Twitter removed many blue ticks from user accounts yesterday.

Several Nigerian celebrities and politicians, including Davido, Wizkid, Tony Elumelu, Olamide, Peter Obi, Tinubu, Atiku, and others, had their verifications removed in yesterday’s purge. In addition, some footballers deactivated their accounts while Musk removed verifications of those who did not subscribe to the blue tick.

Twitter sent a notice titled ‘Building a better Twitter through verification’ to its advertisers, indicating that the changes are part of the platform’s broader verification strategy.

Subscribing to either Twitter Blue or Verified Organizations means that a user has been verified by Twitter as a real person and/or business, and they will have access to a range of creation tools and a more visible organic presence. Twitter stated that the move is aimed at reducing fraudulent accounts and bots while improving the overall user and advertiser experience.
