The clashes between the regular army and the paramilitary militias of the FSR (Rapid Support Forces), which have lasted since mid-April, have left more than 400 dead and 3,500 injured, according to a report by the World Health Organization.

Clashes that erupted in mid-April in Sudan have already left more than 400 dead and more than 3,500 injured, the World Health Organization said on Friday.

“413 people died and 3,551 people were injured,” WHO spokeswoman Margaret Harris said at a regular press briefing in Geneva. Also participating in this briefing, a spokesman for Unicef, James Elder, for his part clarified that “at least 9 children were killed in the fighting, and more than 50 children were injured”.

“Unfortunately, we know that as long as the fighting continues, children will continue to pay the price,” added James Elder. He also said that the life-saving care that was provided before the clashes to some 50,000 children suffering from severe acute malnutrition “has been interrupted”. “The lives of these children are at risk.”

Due to the fighting, many families are trapped, with little or no access to electricity, water, food, and medicine. Sudan has one of the highest child malnutrition rates in the world, with – before recent clashes – more than 600,000 children suffering from severe acute malnutrition, according to Unicef.
