RFI” has shed light on an epidemic that has recently affected about a hundred artisanal fishermen. The fact is that these fishermen suffer from burns and very painful skin lesions that have affected them on the high seas and whose causes are unknown.

The head of the burns department at Donka Hospital, Dr. Karamba Kaba, said that it is a chemical burn of the second and third degree and that this illness is not contagious.

Nurses are responsible for taking care of light cases, disinfecting wounds, and covering them to prevent infection. In addition, the majority of these fishermen originate from Sierra Lerone.

An inter-ministerial crisis cell has been set up by the Guinean authorities to monitor the level of spread of this disease and its causes. To this end, samples have been sent to laboratories in the capital.
