After the success of some African shows or series such as the South African series “Blood and Water” which placed first in the United States, Netflix has revealed its intention to expand its operations in Africa.

Netflix has announced that it has invested the equivalent of €160 million in film content production in Africa since it began working on the continent in 2016.

Netflix’s policy director for sub-Saharan Africa, Shola Sanni told a press conference in Johannesburg, that the video streaming giant’s operations have so far focused on South Africa, Kenya, and Nigeria, creating 12,000 jobs.

Now the company plans to expand its business on the continent by targeting other African countries. With 170 films, series, and documentaries, South Africa is the largest African contributor to the site.

The company promises to support local creative economies and give more and more African storytellers an amplified voice on the global stage.

Netflix’s interest in Africa was highlighted in 2021 when the company partnered with Unesco to fund six short films by young African directors.
