Two of Rand Water’s main reservoirs have been shut down due to an emergency shutdown notice, causing some residents to be without water.

Due to a serious leak that could result in flooding and loss of supply, the water utility informed the city that emergency repairs were required on one of its pipelines originating from the Zuikerbosch Water Treatment Plant.

The B8 pipeline, which runs from the Zuikerbosch Water Treatment Plant to the Mapleton Booster Pumping Station, has experienced a leak that caused some of the electromagnetic equipment to be submerged.

The emergency shutdown has resulted in the depletion of the Vlakfontein one and two Bronberge reservoirs, causing 19 inner-city reservoirs and other areas to be negatively affected by the necessary repairs.

Rand Water’s infrastructure and supply faults have led to a situation where some Gauteng residents have been grappling with low to no water pressure in recent months.

Although the emergency repair work began earlier in the day, some Tshwane residents will be without water until at least midday on Wednesday. The possibility of new developments arising from the repairs remains uncertain.
