South African Ambassador to Algeria, Billy Lizidi Mazitla, met with the representative of Polisario in Algeria, Abdelkader Omar, to prepare for the UN Security Council session on the Sahara.

Algeria sponsored the meeting where the two sides discussed recent developments and informal consultations regarding the Sahara conflict.

The meeting also focused on possible support for the Polisario Front in the Security Council and the expected Russian position.

The two sides also discussed ways to provide humanitarian support to residents of the Tindouf camps through the Polisario Front. International organizations have raised concerns about the misappropriation of humanitarian aid by the Polisario leadership.

South Africa’s role in providing political cover for the front was also discussed, given its realization of its weak position related to the practice of “hostile actions” east of the wall, which impedes the revival of the political process.
