An explosion in Ethiopia’s Amhara region’s capital claimed at least two lives, while protests against the inclusion of local security forces in the national police and army had been raging for days.

Protests erupted for days in several towns and cities throughout the region as members of the local military and militias in Amhara declared their opposition to the government’s order to dissolve and join the federal army or police.

Several people were hurt and two individuals died in Bahir Dar on Monday as a result of an explosion, according to a police officer. It was unclear what started the explosion or whether the protests had anything to do with it.

On today morning, residents claimed they could hear heavy weaponry and gunfire on the city’s outskirts.
