South Africa’s Minister of Justice and Correctional Services, Ronald Lamola, on Friday announced the rejection by the UAE court of the extradition request of brothers Atul and Rajesh Gupta, who are involved in political and financial scandals in South Africa.

Lamola said in a press briefing that the South African government learned with “shock and dismay” of the Guptas’ failed extradition request after they appeared at an extradition hearing on 13 February.

He said South African authorities were informed of the Dubai court’s decision on Thursday evening.

South Africa had filed an extradition request from the United Arab Emirates against the Gupta brothers, who were involved in the embezzlement of public funds.

In addition, the International Police Co-operation Organisation (Interpol) had issued red notices against four members of the Gupta family for their involvement in “state capture”.
