April 2023: the Unmissable Events of African Culture

April is a month full of events related to African culture. Here are the main Afro or African cultural events not to be missed this month.

On 1st April at the Magnin-A gallery in France, an exhibition entitled “Dakar, Dakar” dedicated to the two Senegalese artists Ndary Lo and Assane N’Doye, will be held.

Both artists are passionate about the body and movement. Ndary Lo presents metal sculptures while Assane N’Doye often presents a mosaic of surprising and sensual forms.

Since 4th April, the Musée du Quai Branly in Paris has been tracing the career of the American artist Anne Eisner in the Congo.

Anne Eisner is a figure of American abstract expressionism, strongly inspired by her stays in Africa as an anthropologist.

From 5th April, an exhibition of the two art geniuses Basquiat x Warhol – four hands will be held at the Fondation Louis Vuitton. The works they created together evoke the insertion of the African-American community into the North American narrative.

From 7th April, an exhibition called “Ramses and the Gold of the Pharaohs” will be organized at the Grande Halle de La Villette in Paris, presenting 181 treasures from ancient Egypt.

In Abidjan, until 8 April, the LouiSimone Guirandou Gallery presents Symbol System, featuring the artistic works of Ghislain Brown-Kossi and Yan Garnier.

From the 14th to the 16th of April, the Cabaret Africain, which explores the riches of North Africa, returns to the Cabaret Sauvage in Paris, with a musical performance by Méziane Azaïche.

The online art fair African Galleries Now continues until 15th April and this year features 185 works from 11 galleries. This fair aims to support contemporary creation on the African continent.

In Abidjan, until 11th June, the Cécile Fakhoury Gallery is presenting the first solo exhibition of Marie-Claire Messouma Malanbien, who grew up between Abidjan and Paris. In her works, the ordinary and the sacred, organic matter and symbolic presence meet.

From the 18th to the 22nd of April, the galleries of Saint-Germain-des-Prés will host the 10th edition of Paris Tribal, a not to be missed event in the world of tribal art.

From 20 to 30 April, the 39th edition of Vues d’Afrique opens its doors in Montreal. Among the highlights of the largest African film festival on the American continent is the opening night at the Cinéma Guzzo du Marché Central with the Canadian premiere of the film Hommage dune fille à son père, by Fatou Cissé.

On 28th April, the 20th edition of the Tarifa-Tangiers African Film Festival (FCAT) opens, which until 7th May will be celebrating the relationship between the Strait of Gibraltar and Hispano-Moroccan culture, resuming its activities on both sides of the Strait of Gibraltar.

Applications are open until 30th April for the ellipse Prize, awarded each year in the field of art to highlight the artistic creation of an African country on French territory.

30th April is also the deadline for submitting an application for the fourth edition of the Voix d’Afriques literary prize, initiated by the JC Lattès publishing house, RFI, and the Cité Internationale des Arts and designed to bring out young French-speaking authors from the African continent.

Until 30th April, the Berkeley Art Museum and Pacific Film Archive (BAMPFA) in the United States presents Out of Africa, a selection of photographs and installations exploring the African continent as a site of extraction, exploitation, and displacement for economic purposes.
